Countryside Resort

Location: Puslinch ON
Build Durations: 8 months
Construction Cost: ~$1MIL

Tasked with a blank-slate estate acreage, this project seamlessly integrates a new 5,000-square-foot custom luxury home with its vast natural surroundings. Rather than allowing the massive scale of the property to feel empty, the design introduces a highly structured, multi-level linear progression that physically anchors the home to the surrounding landscape.

By balancing grand architectural statements with intimate, human-centric design, the property transforms from a sprawling estate into a series of sophisticated, functional outdoor rooms.

The Design Strategy

  • Architectural Alignment: Three wide sections of transitional stone stairs cascade directly from the main covered porch into the shallow end of a long, linear poolscape. This intentional layout directly mirrors the home’s grand “L-shaped” footprint.
  • Dual-Programmed Scale: The environment is engineered to comfortably host grand, large-scale entertainment while remaining intensely cozy and private for a single family on a quiet weekday evening.
  • Smart Utility Masking: A premium wellness sauna is strategically positioned to entirely mask the pool equipment and utility pad, preserving clean, uninterrupted architectural panoramas.

Key Features

The Terraced Pool & Sunken Lounge

The layout features a clever counter-balance of grades. While the primary pool deck commands the upper tier, the landscape drops elegantly on the far side into a symmetrical, sunken wood-burning fire pit zone. This terracing minimized massive site excavation while effortlessly segmenting the expansive lawn. Built in wood boxes flank the fire pit area to create a nice architectural and functional feature.

Microclimate Programming

The design leverages natural sunlight and local topography to optimize daily comfort:

  • Morning: Facing east over rolling hills and a natural pond, the space captures spectacular sunrises and rolling valley fog.
  • Evening: As the day transitions, the home naturally casts a cooling shadow across the primary dining patio, providing natural thermal relief without requiring intrusive mechanical shade structures.
  • Shelter: The sunken masonry walls of the fire pit provide built-in, wind-protected comfort for night-time gathering and a view out over the pond.

Material & Textural Unity

To ensure the home and landscape read as a singular, concurrent build, the design relies on an ultra-refined, monolithic material selection:

  • Hardscape: Light, natural, smooth-finished stone deliberately echoes the home’s premium Indiana limestone detailing.
  • Contrast: The sunken lounge introduces a dramatic, exposed masonry pool wall paired with built-in, flush-mounted timber wood-storage boxes.
  • Furnishings & Flora: Low-profile modern furnishings preserve sweeping valley views. Structured, crisp plantings near the hardscape gracefully soften at the perimeter, transitioning the modern stone structures into the rustic terrain.
