Starting as a small company BBQ, this thing has grown legs and wandered out into the orbit of the Frontiers community. Year one guests were the usual suspects: Frontiers team members, spouses, and a couple of toddlers – about 25 people. In year two, we made the decision to invite our valued trade partners to the BBQ as a token of appreciation for helping bring these projects to life. We were pleasantly surprised by a turnout of around 65 people!
In 2024, for the 3rd annual BBQ, we decided to continue the trajectory and open the event to clients. With approximately 110 people rsvp’d, we decided to upgrade the venue and move it to our Passive House development site in the South end of Guelph. With so much additional venue space, the strategic decision was quickly made to order a couple of bouncy castles for the swarm of toddlers headed our way… bold moves.

The Frontiers team was tasked with incorporating an educational component into the mix. Our 8’ tall Passive House wall mock-up was brought to the venue site for spectators to analyze the 9” of continuous exterior insulation, the water/air/vapour control layers, and the high-performance window installation detailing.
Informational display boards, recent print media ads, and marketing banners were printed and hung. The stage was set. After flash thunderstorms during the day, Mother Nature gave us the window needed to host the event. Steam rolled off the wet ground as the heat continued with no relief. Food was consumed, stories were shared, laughs were had, and bonds were strengthened.
‘Community’ is one of our three core values, and this event exemplified that sense of community within with projects that we embark on. It takes a large team of stakeholders to come together and make project execution not only a success but a pleasurable experience. It often boils down to communication – and while nobody is ever perfect – having a robust team of trade partners and vendors that have been in the trenches together before is really what makes it a smooth process. These project team members understand the value of communication, passion for the craft, and continuous learning. Pair that with a homeowner that gets it, and values the experience as much as the end product, and we are all set up for success!
